Princess Polly: Are Online Boutiques Worth the Hype?

Updated: Nov 10, 2020

Princess Polly is an Australian company that busted out on the retail scene in 2010. The company is known for its posh yet edgy style and countless collabs with famous Instagram and Tik Tok influencers. But does the quality really live up to the hype?

Hi everyone, and welcome back to Closet Confidential! This post is dedicated to all things Princess Polly, including information about the brand and what to look for if you ever plan on buying from the site!

What is Princess Polly?

As stated, Princess Polly is a fairly new brand that although is based in Australia, is able to ship to multiple areas of the world.

It is an online boutique that keeps up with the latest fashion trends and offers a professional, expensive look for less. It offers a wide variety of styles, ranging from preppy to professional to even retro and grunge.

Is Princess Polly Legit?

Normally, when customers hear that a company is based outside of the United States, they become wary of scams and unreliable shipping procedures. However, after buying from this company a few times, I am pleased to say that yes, this company is quite legit.

In my opinion, the best thing about this company would probably be their shipping and return policy. Princess Polly offers two-day FREE shipping on all orders over $50, which is not a bad price considering what people are willing to pay for clothes these days. Not only this, but they also have a flexible 30-day return policy that covers all of their items (including sale and clearance items!). Once delivered, your clothes will arrive in a waterproof package (with a handle on one side for maximum convenience) and each item will be individually packaged in a recyclable plastic material. Sound's pretty good to me.

Affordability, Sizing, and Quality:

I would say that Princess Polly falls in the middle of the spectrum in terms of affordability. Similar to Brandy Melville (which I reviewed last week), the clothes aren't dirt cheap, but they're also no designer brand. Depending on the category, an item may range from the price of $7 to $50. However, if you want to get the most bang for your buck on this site, here's a tip: always check the sale/clearance section first.

Now, this tip doesn't only apply for Princess Polly; I recommend looking at the sale section for any brand, because in my experience, you can always find some really good hidden gems for a fraction of the cost. In particular, though, the amount items on the Princess Polly site is phenomenal, consisting of streetwear, grunge, preppy, and even casual clothing styles. So, you're bound to find something you like, and the best part, you'll get it for $20 or less.

In terms of the company's sizing, depending on where you're shopping from, the brand accommodates and alters its own sizing for you (another thing I enjoy about the brand). This means that if you're in the US, they'll show you the US sizing of their clothes (ex. 0, 2, 4, 6...). One thing I'd keep in mind however, their clothing tends to run small, so I'd recommend sizing up on most of their items.

Above are some products I've bought from the store and loved. You can find them here.

Based on reviews I've gathered from people online as well as from friends, there have been mixed feelings about the quality of Princess Polly's clothing. Some have said that the material of their items feels cheap compared to what is shown in the stock photos, while others have been extremely pleased with their purchases. Here's what I say: while I've never been displeased with a purchase I've made from the store, I do know that some of their items will not meet your expectations. These items include things like their accessories (jewelry, phone cases, makeup, etc.), and bigger products such as jackets or shoes. Other than this, I'd recommend taking a peek at the material breakdown of each product, and decide if you'd be comfortable wearing it or not.

Fake Reviews:

The biggest con (in my opinion), about Princess Polly is its reputation for buying fake reviews to place under the products on their site. They've also been known to suppress any negative reviews, and block them from appearing on the site. This means that you might buy an item because it seemingly has 10+ positive reviews, but when it arrives, it's absolutely horrendous. Yes, this is annoying, but in reality, this is a technique that many companies use to boost sales and attract new buyers.

To avoid getting burned by this practice, I'd recommend that you look for reviews outside of the company- this means going to independent blogs, review sites, and even by emailing customer support for additional pictures.

Final Review:

Overall, I would give this company a 8/10. The website is quite easy to navigate and the products come in secure packaging. Most of their items are pretty affordable and the quality is not bad for their pricing. The site also offers a wide variety of styles to choose from, so I'd give this company the green light.

If you have any experiences with the company that you'd like to share, I'd love to hear them in the comments below. Thank's for reading!
